Rebecca is just like any other 12-year-old, except that she suffers from juvenile diabetes. But she takes comfort in knowing that she is not alone -- even her idol, Elliott Yamin, was diagnosed with the disease when he was 16. And she's in for a big surprise when the former American Idol contender shows up. "I’m a huge fan," she gushes. Elliott smiles, "I am a big fan of yours! We have something in common -- we both have a pump." Elliott and Rebecca tell Rach how they use an pump to monitor their insulin levels.
Juvenile diabetes is a disease millions of kids are diagnosed with every year. "I am inspired by her," Elliott says of Rebecca. "I am inspired by young people that aren’t afraid to talk about their disease.”
When Elliott was diagnosed with the disease, it changed his life forever. "I went from being this happy-go-lucky kid, and then the next thing you know I have this disease that isn't curable. I felt like my world was crashing down -- it was a tough pill to swallow."
He tells Rachael that at first he freaked out and feared he had so many limits because of the disease, but that he quickly learned to cope. Elliott reveals his secrets to staying healthy when on the road: checking his blood sugar as often as possible, consulting with a doctor, developing a meal plan and keeping active. He wants kids to know that diabetes doesn't have to stop them from anything. "If you dream big and take care of yourself," Elliott says, "you can attain anything you set out to do."
