I went to a restaurant and asked if I could eat the mussels that were not open and he said yes. Today on Rachels show she was cooking with mussels and she said if they do not open, do not eat them. My question is why? Help!!!

The ones that don't open are dead. They are unsafe and you can die.

Ewwww I hope you weren't at a fine dining establishment and were told that! I'd go back, speak to the manager and have the manager advise the ill-informed employee that you throw em' out if they are open BEFORE you cook em' and you throw em' out if they don't open AFTER you cook them. That place is asking for a lawsuit.
