wade up newpaper and get it wet with water and set it in your fridge and it will soak up the odor.

I learned from another message post on Rachael Ray about a product called FridgeIT made just for this. Uses activated carbon which I think is what makes the newspaper trick work ok - it's the carbon I've been told. After reading some pretty good reviews, I also checked out the company blog -http://innofresh.wordpress.com/ I ordered some on line and it came right away and been using it since with great satisfaction. No more baking soda and I really think it works better than wet newspaper. Definitely better than baking soda. I now started putting these in other areas around house - I give it a 10!

What about the old standard of the open box of baking soda in the frig obviously in the back so no one knocks it over.

Charcol brickettes work great too. The same charcol we use to BBQ with only so much less expensive then the charcol filters in plastic containers. These work great in freezers, and around the house. Started using these in the sumer camper for overwintering and believe me if it works there it works anywhere.
ANOTHER is coffee grounds around the house and in the fridge to soak up odors. Charcol is much less expensive and easier to handle though.

I grew up with baking soda and never really was impressed. The fridge always seemed to smell anyway. I saw a show on the Food Network where they compared baking soda to activated carbon and the carbon was much, much better. I agree, and the product that they showed was the purple cube Fridge IT that I also use. It really is better and for just a couple of dollars, it lasts and works... I checked out that blog mentioned in this post by Sarah. Pretty good. Been using it in my cabinets and drawers too. That's something I just would not use charcoal brickets for.

Guess I will try the carbon if it works better then it's worth it. Thanks for the tip, do you know where you can buy it, I don't think I've seen it in grocery stores????

Try a cottonball soaked in vanilla extract in a small dish.It works.

Oh yes, activated carbon works noticably better than baking soda and definitely better than newspaper. I like the idea of vanilla too, but personally I want to get rid of the smell and not introduce another one. I am more than satisfied with this product FridgeIT. It's rare to find a product that really works. I just checked out their blog and offering a promotional discount right now so I ordered more. Yeah!

These discussions are so helpful. Thank you Rachael. So back to these FridgeIT odor absorbers. My refrigerator has never been this clean smelling so big kudo's to the company that makes these. I mentioned earlier was going to try in other areas. Found out it is amazing next to the smelliest trash in the world.
Got my friend to try next to litter box. She gives it a 10 too. I'll keep searching and let you know. If you want to find them, just search for Innofresh on the internet.

Yes, yes. I use FridgeIt odor absorbers too and find that nothing else comes close to really getting rid of some pretty bad fridge odors. Been using for years and pretty much also have these under every sink and in closets and cabinets. I usually forget they are there since it works so well. I also buy them at a Sur La Table store in my area which is also a great store for anything kitchen. I wouldn't be surprised to see Rachael with a FridgeIt in her fridge.

I rarely bother writing reviews of products, but the more I find ways to use this FridgeIT odor absorber, the more that I am impressed. I bought an entire case on line after seeing a discount on the company blog. It looks like they are still offering it. So, now I have these purple cubes in fridge and kitchen cabinets, but discovered they are amazing next to trash in kitchen and some other areas and I even gave some to my daughter for diaper pail - success!. Got rid of that stink. If you have any smells in house and want to get rid of them, this is for you. Think I'll start a local fan club.

Great topic. I've had such problems with my refrigerator smelling and tried the baking soda, vinegar, rolled up newspaper and even tried charcoal briquettes from my BBQ. Nothing worked very well.
After reading the earlier comments about fridgeIT odor absorbers, I checked out the company blog which has lots of interesting ways to use activated charcoal. Lots of people seem to love fridge It, so I ordered from them on line and got it really fast which I was impressed with. Bottom line - these really do work. I'm so impressed and have even convinced some friends and we are all now fans. Now, we are all finding new places around the house to put them. So, I definitely recommend these activated charcoal odor absorbers and grateful that my fridge does not smell anymore. Yeah!

Amazing how popular this topic is so I'd thought that I would give an update. Been using FRIDGE IT now for awhile with wonderful results. Already purchased more from the company website which I also got right away. Not only is my fridge cleaner and fresher smelling than I've had in a long time, but I have these little purple FridgeIt's all over my house. Working great under each sink and next to kitchen trash can. Neighbor using these for her litter box and loves them.
I discovered another use - luggage. Keeps the musty odor in check in my luggage as I travel, particularly in higher humidity areas. OK, so kudo's to Innofresh. Check out their blog too which is where I've got lots of helpful info. I'll keep checking back to see if anyone else is as excited about this.

This products sounds wonderful; I am wondering if anyone has tried it in the freezer. I seem to have more problems there than in the fridge, sometimes ice cubes even taste funny and I have checked out all other options to that problem.

I use that product as well it works great. I also added a few small sheet pans in my fridge as well for all the condiments and containers and one for raw meats we use and with kids it works great if they accidently spill something it lands on the sheet pan and all you have to do is wash that not the entire fridge.

Yes, I use the FridgeIT product in both my freezer and freezer. I read that it works just as well in freezer which is a big advantage over baking soda. I commented earlier about how impressed I am with this product. Still am. Also after reading more in their blog, I use these odor absorbers all over my house - particularly good in getting rid of musty smell in cabinets too.

Yes, yes. I use FridgeIT in the freezer too. Been great for getting that wierd taste on the ice away. Mainly, I use the product in the fridge which has been a blessing. Haven't had any more odor problems. I've been buying directly from the company where they also offer some discounts. I've got most neighbors and friends hooked on this now and we are having fun coming up with new places to use it. Guess it works well on diaper pails too. Wow.

Wow, sure alot of readers on this one. My electricity went off in home while away and when I got back, the smell from fridge was unbelievable. Never smelled anything that bad. Cleaned it out and used bleach which helped. I contacted the company Innofresh that others mentioned and they suggested also cleaning with soap and water all the door seals. Good idea - thawed meat dripped there. Also, I bought some of the cubes right on line that they recommended. Got it super fast which was nice. After just one day, the difference was really noticable. These really work better than anything else I've tried....and I've tried them all. So my vote is for these purple FridgeIT cubes and you can get them on line. Yeah!

DO NOT PLACE ACTIVATED CHARCOAL IN YOUR MICROWAVE OVEN!!! I had an odor in my microwave, and had already put baking soda, and already used sliced lemons. So I got the activated charcoal from the fish store and just spread some on top of the baking soda. And then I was going to warm it up. The activate charcoal went off like the fourth of july, melting the container, and remained super hot for a long time. It could cause an explosion, so do try this at home or anywhere else.

I preceded to just set it in a dish and let it stand. Over several days it did absorb the odor. :)

Looks like this is a popular post and I'm happy to give my updates too. I previously posted how delighted I am with the FRIDGE IT odor absorber. Still love it and of course use it in my refrigerator, but have since found it works great anywhere. I have yet to discover a place I could not get good results.
This week, found a new use for FRIDGEIT.- Football gear and pads. My son came home with the worst smelling pads so I place a few of these and the next day, most of the smell was gone. Amazing.
I hope other people post here too. I'd love to share stories and this post sure is getting alot of attention.

Wow, this posting has gotten so many readers. I promised another update so after my last post about using fridgeIT activated charcoal odor absorbers for just about everywhere around my house including refrigerator and under sinks, etc., I mentioned now using for son's football gear. It seems a coach from a high school read this and contacting me. He told me that since reading my post, he now buys these FridgeIT odor absorbers by the case from Innofresh and gives them out to his players. That's a pretty good testimonial.

Coffee in cheese cloth or a dish-defintely-either used or unused , even instant. I go to the pet store, fish section and get the charcoal for aquarium water-that works too. Good luck -find it and kill it!

I grew up with baking soda in my refrigerator and it seems that it is OK most of the time. But,with the holidays coming up and after reading these other suggestions, I'm going to try the fridgeit activated charcoal. Anyone else have experience with this?
